Like C-reactive protein (CRP), SAA is valuable for diagnosing and monitoring inflammatory conditions, but it is often more sensitive in detecting viral infections, renal transplant rejection, and inflammation in patients on immunosuppressive or corticosteroid therapy. It is also strongly linked to disease activity in inflammatory arthritis. Combined measurement of SAA and CRP enhances diagnostic accuracy for infections. For patients with AA amyloidosis, reducing SAA levels can improve outcomes.
