Folate
Folate
This assay is intended for the in vitro quantitative determination of folate in human serum, plasma, and whole blood. It is used as an aid in the diagnosis of anemia. Folate, also known as pteroylglutamic acid, is a water-soluble B vitamin essential for various metabolic processes, including nucleic acid and protein synthesis, and amino acid metabolism. Its demand increases during pregnancy, making it vital for normal cell function and growth. Folate promotes the formation of healthy red blood cells, and its deficiency can lead to impaired hemoglobin production, blocked cell maturation, and megaloblastic anemia. Causes of folate deficiency include insufficient dietary intake, poor absorption due to gastrointestinal disorders or enzyme deficiencies, and excessive consumption. Folate testing is mainly used clinically to support the diagnosis of megaloblastic anemia. Common testing methods include ELISA, chemiluminescence, and immunofluorescence.
